Adjust your weight with gut bacteria

by usmanzia on February 9, 2010

In todays fast pace world – being overweight is  increasing problem , a problem which many are trying to combat, both with information about proper diet and exercise, but also scientifically. In the latter category you will find a team of Danish researchers from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at Aarhus University. Researchers are currently studying how the bacteria in your intestines helps to regulate metabolism, as a way to influence it through a particular diet or medication.

We know already that, for example. yogurt has a beneficial effect on intestinal flora, and scientists have also identified groups of bacteria that are prominent in respectively overweight and lean subjects.

The goal is to determine the molecular mechanisms that take place in order to determine the effect of different bacteria on metabolism.

There is still a long way to understand the processes that occur as an interplay between bacteria, genes and metabolism, but the hope is to develop a medical treatment for obesity.
